Pipers River Freight Capacity Upgrade

Bridge strengthening for the Department of State Growth using crosshead post-tensioning and CFRP shear strengthening, extending the freight capacity of an existing structure without replacement.

Pipers River Freight Capacity Upgrade

A $1.6 million freight capacity upgrade delivered on a live, high-volume route.

The scope combined transverse shear strengthening (tensioned hanger rods through the deck), longitudinal shear reinforcement (over-cored deck dowels), crosshead post-tensioning with end brackets and stress bars, and vertical shear strengthening of the pier crossheads by overhead coring and epoxied through-bolts from bespoke access scaffolding.

Ground Penetrating Radar scanning located existing reinforcement ahead of coring, and a proprietary barrier system with traffic management professionals kept the route open throughout.

Key figures: $1.6M, CFRP and post-tensioning strengthening, June 2023 to February 2024.
