Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year 2023

In the picturesque island state of Tasmania, one young engineer is making waves in the world of engineering with his innovative and sustainable designs. Jarrod Thomas, a Project Engineer at BridgePro Engineering, is not your average engineer. At just 25 years old, he has already left an indelible mark on his home state and the wider engineering community. With a passion for creating lasting impacts and a commitment to advancing society through great engineering, Jarrod embodies the future of the profession.

Jarrod's journey in engineering began when he embarked on a Bachelor's degree in Ocean Engineering (Co-Op) at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania. Born and bred in this island paradise, Jarrod's deep connection to Tasmania fuels his drive to implement innovative yet sustainable designs that leave a legacy for future generations.

His career at BridgePro Engineering started in 2018, while he was still a student engineer. Jarrod's dedication to his craft was evident as he worked nights and holidays to gain valuable experience. Upon graduation at the end of 2020, he seamlessly transitioned to full-time employment, becoming an integral part of the BridgePro team.

At BridgePro, Jarrod serves as a dedicated Project Engineer. However, his contributions extend far beyond this role. He has gained valuable experience as a permanent and temporary works design engineer and has even taken on the responsibilities of a project manager. This diverse background equips him with a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of engineering projects, making him a versatile asset to any team.

Jarrod's passion for engineering goes beyond his professional responsibilities. He actively explores different structures, methods, materials, and equipment to enhance his knowledge and seek innovative solutions. His curiosity knows no bounds, encompassing both local and global engineering practices. With a strong environmental consciousness, Jarrod constantly strives to minimise the environmental impact of his projects, whether it's through the efficient use of materials or sustainable methodologies.

Jarrod's work ethic is exemplary. He sets high standards for himself, displaying meticulous attention to detail in everything he does. Challenges are welcomed, and pressure is met with calm determination. Time and again, he has delivered exceptional results within tight deadlines, proving his dedication to excellence.

I started at BridgePro while at University as a student engineer and then Aaron (Founder & Managing Director) took me under his wing and offered me a scholarship... now with the young engineers I mentor, I base how I teach and support others by the ways I was taught.
